May is Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month

Every year in Georgia, there are 25,000 pregnancies and 18,000 births among girls ages 15-19. Studies show that teen mothers are less likely to finish school and often live in poverty. Children of teen parents are often at risk of poor healthcare, abuse and neglect.

Further, a recently released study shows that 20% of young people have had sex by their 15th birthday. www.teenpregnancy.org

Education Programs

We have provided community based health education in the Central Savannah River Area for over thirty-two years. We believe education is vital to the understanding of human sexuality and a healthy lifestyle and that every individual has a right to pursue health information and services without fear, shame or exploitation.

Our Community Health Education Department offers a wide variety of broad-based outreach programs to civic, religious, and social service organizations. It also provides community based health education workshops to adolescents, young adults and parents. All programs are customized to meet the client's needs.

The education department's resource center offers access to educational materials, books, brochures and videos.

If you are interested in having an educational workshop or seminar at your place of worship or organization, please call (706)724-5550.

Parent-Child Communication

At the center of this program is the video kit Talking About Sex: A Guide For Families which helps parents understand and communicate effectively about adolescent development. Parents participating in this program have an opportunity to take an active role in their child's sexuality education. Both parents and children learn communication techniques that allow them to openly discuss sensitive issues together at home. This video kit has won several educational awards, local and national media attention, and is endorsed by Whoopie Goldberg and Judy Blume. The kit includes a thirty-minute video, parent resource guide and activity book.

Reproductive Health & Responsible Sexuality Workshops

These skill-based workshops are devised for college and adult audiences of both sexes. The primary focus is on providing factual information on responsible sexuality, birth control, sexually transmitted diseases, HIV/AIDS, cancer prevention and communication skills.
